Mahendravikramavarmā who is known as the author of Mattavilāsa was a King of the Chālukya dynasty who ruled from the city of Kalyāṇa in present-day Karnataka during the late 12th century CE. Not much is known about his life, but he is believed to have been a patron of literature and the arts, and is credited with several other literary works besides Mattavilāsa.

Mahendravikramavarmā is considered an important figure in the development of Sanskrit literature, particularly in the area of drama. His play Mattavilāsa is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Sanskrit drama, praised for its literary merit, social commentary, and influence on later works. In addition to his contribution to drama, Mahendravikramavarmā was also a prolific poet, and is believed to have authored several other works in addition to Mattavilāsa. He is known to have been a patron of the arts, and his court was a center of literary and cultural activity during his reign.
