Vīranandi was a Jain monk and scholar who lived in India during the 11th century CE. He is best known as the author of the Candraprabhacarita. This Sanskrit epic poem tells the story of the life of Candraprabha, the eighth Tīrthaṅkara or enlightened being of Jainism. According to Jain tradition, Candraprabha was born in Ayōdhyā as the son of King Mahāsena and Queen Lakṣmaṇa. He renounced his royal status and became a Jain monk at a young age, dedicating his life to pursuing spiritual knowledge and enlightenment. Vīranandi's Candraprabhacarita follows the life of Candraprabha from his birth to his attainment of mokṣa or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The epic poem is written in a lyrical and highly literary style and is notable for its vivid descriptions of the natural world and its nuanced exploration of Jain philosophy.
In addition to his work as an author, Vīranandi was also a respected teacher and scholar within the Jain community. He is credited with writing several other works on Jainism, including commentaries on Jain texts and treatises on Jain philosophy.
